You could make an argument that it dates back before this since you have a crossing of viking culture and the byzantine roman empire (*wink*) but at that point you could even bring it further to the first roman empire but why stop there ? Why not go further ? The roman empire follows the republic itself following the kingdom, the transition being heavily inspired by the athenian one but then you have cultures in Greece that largely predate the city-state kind of paradigm of ancient greece (think Mycenaean or before) and since the alphabet is heavily inspired from proto sinaitic itself stemming from hyeroglyphs you could trace it back all the way to the egyptians near prehistoric time with the genesis of the hyeroglyphic writing system and at this point Genesis is not so far (or if you are normal : fish doing weird thing like evolving but fish being a group term for everything and anything is another parenthesis and this slide is already somehow long)
