1

Explain probability in simple terms

Earlier:

  • We saw data forming a bell curve.

  • We saw extreme values are rare.

But why are extreme values rare?

Because probability of extreme events is low.

Probability explains:

  • Why most students score near average

  • Why very high or very low scores are less common

Probability is the reason distributions look the way they do.

A student asks:

Probability helps us measure chances, not promises.

The teacher says:

She cannot guarantee success.

But she can estimate likelihood.

That likelihood is probability.

Before we can calculate chances, we must know:

  • What are all possible outcomes?

  • What outcome are we interested in?

That is where probability begins.

What is Probability?

Probability tells us how likely something is to happen.

It measures chance.

Basic Formula:

  • Favorable outcomes → The result we want
  • Total outcomes → All possible results

Example 1 :

Tossing a Coin

Possible outcomes :

Head or Tail → 2 outcomes

Probability of Head:

1 ÷ 2 = 0.5

That means 50% chance.
